Critics Consensus

Shoddy filmmaking and a lack of character development derail what could be a potentially compelling tale.

[Director] Hanon seems more interested in exploiting his setting's lush green beauty than exploring the psyches of his bland Bible-thumpers. Go to Full Review Desson Thomson Washington Post Jan 20, 2006
Although the film invests time among the tribesmen, it never really explores the idea that one man's missionary work is another's ideological aggression. And the movie is tentative, dramatically speaking. Go to Full Review Ruthe Stein San Francisco Chronicle Jan 20, 2006

Jelisije J @jjosifovic Feb 7, 2025 A low budget bio pic based on the true story of how missionaries were killed by the natives they tried to convert and how due to their deaths the natives slowly converted and asked for forgiveness. See more Dylpickle08 T @RT50423702 Aug 10, 2024 This film, which is based on true events, portrays the history of missionary families' reconciliation with the tribe that killed their husbands, this tragic occurrence changed the lives of all who were involved and knit them together as a family which taught them how to finally put an end to their violent ways and find peace. Overall, I found this to be a really well-done, realistic, and even inspirational picture of missions. See more Oct 26, 2021 Inspires us to be our better selves. See more jay s @Alohaboy Mar 31, 2021 We are not overloaded with such movies, therefore I appreciate the effort taken by the makers. The /basically uneducated/ critics seem more like primitive urban junkies, with fake realities than something close to human. This is not king kong or star wars like pothouse illusions. I am happy to see the audiences appreciate what bang heads cannot.
