Stylistically, the most engaging aspect of the picture is Stlzl's direction. Go to Full Review Calvin Wilson St. Louis Post-Dispatch Feb 17, 2012

An old-fashioned romance that's easy to like even if you have no interest in German literature, illegal duels or the more romantic aspects of committing suicide. Go to Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times Jan 19, 2012

Pain plus time, this film reminds us, can result in poetry. Go to Full Review Jack Fleischer Battleship Pretension Mar 24, 2021
If you read all the assigned books in your high school literature class, there's plenty of inside baseball here for you to appreciate. On top of that if you like your love stories period, bittersweet, and star-crossed this is a great movie. Go to Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Examiner Jan 4, 2019

Young Goethe seems to take even more liberties with the facts than most pictures in the genre. But, also like many films of the type, its charm and energy are hard to resist. Go to Full Review Witney Seibold CraveOnline Aug 25, 2012

It's just as gorgeously shot, just as clever, just as frothy and dynamic as the period pieces of 15-20 years ago. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Marit Risto F @RT66247982 Aug 31, 2025 The same old, nevrotic split, between the lover and the husband. But the old houses, the charming, young, people, and the genius, rebell, Goethe, make me watch it again, and again, and again...The German language adds to the delight, of course. Despite the morbid practise of selling a daughter to a wealthy man, to provide for her family. Despite the perverse class gap, and the stinking power of the patriarchs. Johann Wolfgang didn't take a "dirty job" to gain independence. Leopold, sorry, Kaspar, stepped on his child's face, until he became popular. Better to not submit to a parent like that, whatever hardship it takes to break free See more Alise H @RT38967971 Jan 25, 2025 Stunning visuals, costumes, and storyline. 100% will watch again. The movie being in German didn't bother me at all, in fact I only picked it because I am learning German. See more Jun 3, 2015 The movie Goethe is a wonderful movie that had great plot and amazing charters. One of the scenes made me feel a little bit uncomfortable because when i had turned my head back to the movie two of the characters were doing it in the dirty while it rained . I honestly thought it was messed up how that girl was playing around with Goethe and then got engaged to the one rich guy which made him pretty depressed and then he died and the book he was writing was published after he died and it was given to his father all around it was a good movie See more Jun 3, 2015 Personally this wasn't my kind of movie. However I know there are many people out there that LOVE movies full of drama, romance and conflict. Now with those three things put together I believe that this could end up being one's favorite movie, but sad to say I am not one to love those types of movies. See more Read all reviews
