Spencer Nielsen Sep 21, 2024 One of those definitive films of the New Hollywood era. I wished I thought it was a masterpiece like so many others, but I still enjoy it very much. See more Teddy B @RT90521672 Sep 30, 2026 Mike Nichols' direction is smooth, packed with humour and appropriately sentimental---I just feel like those sentiments are directed towards the wrong characters. This very much devolves into a direct 'hero and villain' story---far removed from Nichols' more nuanced debut of 'Virginia Woolf'. Yes, Benjamin's ultimate decision is shown as rushed and very slightly immature, but we are kind of forced to be nothing but sympathetic of him. He's a creep. He's a loser, and seems to have no foundation or motivation to make him more interesting. Mrs Robinson is turned from a morally grey, depressed seductress into a snarling pantomime villain, all in her large absence in the last act. I know Benjamin and Elaine's love is supposed to be ultimately too young and too rebellious, but we are simply not put outside Benjamin's viewpoint enough to take a neutral stance on it. See more Ricky B @RT05884968 Aug 30, 2026 Wow! I'm surprised I haven't been aware of this before recently and that, though popular among classic film fans, isn't a household name like some others. Hoffman's performance (and Bancroft too) is just something to admire. The story is wild and the ending is absolutely remarkable. That last scene with Simon and Garfunkel's 'Sound of Silence' playing and the looks of uncertainty mixed with excitement leaves the viewer wondering what will happen next which I think can be a really powerful way to conclude a movie that already makes you feel that way. All through it, you think to yourself "where is this going?" And then...it goes and you find yourself wanting more and appreciating it for what it is. And that S&G score... It's hilarious at times too. But honestly, the affair story is crazy and how Elaine just accepts he screwed her mother multiple times is insanity.
