Critics Consensus

Frenetic to a fault, Guns Akimbo may leave some viewers reaching for the killswitch -- but for others, its videogame-style violence will have plenty of replay value.

B-

Daniel Radcliffe is very good in this movie, but the film starts to lose steam once you realize that it doesn't really have much else to offer beyond these high-energy action sequences.

Howden's film gives itself a good three minutes to play the amateur satirist before it abandons any pretense of cultural commentary and instead embraces every cliché it repeatedly insists it is undermining.

I don't get what's going on here. Are we trolling these internet guys are not? Are we saying this is okay or not? Because he wins when he does what they do.

If you like your action flicks a little left of centre and bordering on the gruesome then Guns Akimbo is the film for you. The fresh creative nature of the film shows why Jason Lei Howden is a director who can potentially breathe creativity into the genre

B

Jason Lei Howden doesn’t hold back on the brutal, violent, bloody, extremely over-the-top action, and as long as the viewer is able to accept this purposefully unrealistic depiction of a real-life videogame death match, it’s a blast of pure entertainment.

It was exactly what I expected with a splash of cliche predictability and your ensemble of good and bad guys realizing they ultimately lose

Harry Potter in a violent comedy? You betcha! Yet another graphic-novel-turned-movie, this film feels like Harley Quinn meets The Running Man. The story of a nerd-turned-gladiator features lots of shaky close-ups and is violent, hectic, and just hilarious. So much blood and so much laughter at the same time...who knew that's even possible?

Guns Akimbo is a batshit crazy blast of mayhem that straps a pair of pistols to Daniel Radcliffe and hits the gas. Samara Weaving brings killer energy, the action comes in hot, and the whole thing plays like a video game designed by a lunatic with a grudge against subtlety. It’s blood, bullets, and black comedy with its middle fingers raised. Lock, load, and enjoy the carnage.

Guns Akimbo is pure cinematic mayhem—loud, reckless, and gloriously committed to its own insanity. It never apologizes for the chaos, instead turning every outrageous moment into fuel for the next. Beneath the neon-soaked violence is a sharp sense of humor and a surprisingly big heart. It's the kind of film that grabs you by the collar, laughs in your face, and never loosens its grip.
