Critics Consensus

Minimalist in presentation while getting great mileage out of Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys' superb performances, Hallow Road is a nerve-wracking thriller that takes audiences down a haunting path.

The Travers Take

Two people talking in a car. Hardly the stuff of white-knuckle drama, right? It is when you hitch two phenomenal actors, Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys, to a suspenseful script and tightly coiled direction by Babak Anvari, and then let them rip.

At the same time, however, none of the stuff that has to be protected for the sake of the audience’s viewing pleasure is actually worth protecting.

Although it’s far from perfect, Hallow Road does a lot with very little, and feels refreshing in its avoidance of maximalist filmmaking.

Director Babak Anvari crafts a wonderfully creepy atmosphere for this eerie horror thriller, claustrophobically centred on a couple racing through the night to help their daughter.

Hallow Road starts off as a promising thriller, but it shoots itself in the foot with a hollow, unsatisfying, and illogical conclusion.

As a double feature I had a blast. Miss these types of screenings. “Vincent Must Die” was average for me. Nothing special. Seems the director didn’t know or couldn’t think of an explanation so just left it as whatever. “Hallow Road” was the better film. Mysterious and intriguing. I have my idea about it but overall in the moment I was locked in. I went with it and had a great time. Overall I wish they would do more double features.

Boring- entire thing takes place in real time just watching a couple drive a car- but not in an artsy way that pays off. Ending is disappointing and nothing happens the entire time

Horrible, pointless, boring movie with no payoff. Called a horror thriller, but it’s not scary, and not thrilling.

A very good irish thriller, it keeps you at the edge of your seat all the time and the ending has a twist. Acting is superb; both actors in the leading roles are excellent. Highly recommended.
