Minnesota is the heartland of US hockey, creating more skaters--on the local rinks and in the NHL--than any other state. Here, the senior boys of rival towns--one an emerging dynasty, the other with a fabled past--face down uncertain futures as they skate for a last chance to etch their names into local lore. Where Texas football has Friday Night Lights, Minnesota high school hockey has Hockeyland.

Two huge gifts a documentary filmmaker can receive are access and good timing. "Hockeyland" director Tommy Haines had both.

...enjoyable enough if you’re happy with a film that stays resolutely on the surface of its story and sticks to the tried-and-true sports movie playbook, but don’t come looking for anything you haven’t seen before.

Though a few players stand out, "Hockeyland" is more about the team, the game and the towns than it is about the individual.

It’s near impossible not to get caught up on the fervor of it all, and we’re simply observers; imagine living this life—that’s what this movie does.

The filmmakers have told a compelling story about a very specific place, even while not straying far from documentary formula.

So engaging because of the personal stories and the reasons behind the culture of hockey in a small town. I knew nothing about this sport and because of this documentary have a deeper understanding and appreciation of it. Loved this film!

This sports documentary was very good. The entire crew did a spectacular job on this documentary. This true story about two high school hockey teams in Minnesota that are passionate about hockey and their plans to win a national championship for their town was incredible and inspirational. It's about having fun and doing what you've always wanted. If you haven't seen this documentary yet, check it out sometime. It's a definite must see for all hockey fans.

You don't need to be a hockey fan to live the story about these kids. Go Golden Bears. Go Hawks. Go any kid who gives it their all.
