PanProduction T @ChunPan9 Mar 16, 2021 This film has a Kafkaesque quality to it. Absurdity mixed with surrealism. A dark comedy. See more Sep 28, 2013 One of the stronger directorial debuts in Asian cinema in recent years. Kantai's story is very ambiguous, but it's most resonant in it's scenes, which include intelligent observations on culture clashing, as well as rather stunning character interactions. It certainly isn't the most exciting or meditative film, but it proves that Koji Fukada is an inspired director, and one who is likely to only improve. See more Nov 13, 2012 A family that runs a print shop finds it impossible to say no to an interloper who invites himself, then his wife, then his "extended family" to stay in their cramped house, all the while exposing his hosts' dark secrets. This satire of Japanese politeness and xenophobia is well made but doesn't travel particularly well. See more Oct 19, 2011 nicely understated, although gets a bit silly at the end See more Jul 22, 2011 This is an adoring little film of what might happen if Tommy Chong decided to live with you after he had semi cleaned up his act. What starts out as a simple family drama quickly turns into a crazy dramedy as Mikio starts losing control to Kagawa who is clearly the dominant person. By the end all hell is breaking loose and there are more characters on screen than you have fingers and toes to count them with. See more Read all reviews
