Critics Consensus

Well-intentioned but formulaic, Just Wright has winning leads but can't overcome its preponderance of cliches.

Although it's replete with solid supporting players and even stronger goodwill, Just Wright buckles under the burden of its pure intentions. Too many auxiliary, moralizing plot points and characters are picked up, only to be suddenly dropped. Go to Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Sep 22, 2010

The movie isn't bad but…[Latifah] deserves much more than what she apparently think she does. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Sydney Epps Call and Post (Cleveland) Jan 25, 2022

In a Queen Latifah film, and most assuredly in this Queen Latifah film, love is always possible and even the people who disappointment you the most are ultimately redeemed. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Stephen C @bob25009 Jun 20, 2026 The worldwide gross is $21,570,263.00 over a budget of $12,000,000.00. It just wasn't enough money to give funds to actors after taxes. See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom Apr 23, 2026 Just Wright is an alright romantic sports film that does a few things well but never fully rises above average. The story is simple and predictable, following familiar rom-com beats, but it’s carried somewhat by the charm of the leads and the easygoing tone. The relationship at the center is likable enough, and there are moments of warmth and humor that make it an easy watch. However, it rarely takes any risks, and the emotional conflict feels a bit surface-level. The sports angle is also fairly light, so don’t expect much intensity or depth there either. Overall, it’s a perfectly fine movie to put on casually, but it doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression. I’d rate it a 5/10. See more Heidi T @HMtT223 Jan 21, 2026 It’s a cute date night movie. You can never go wrong with Queen Latifah, & Common is solid. Phylicia Rashad & James Pickens Jr steal the show in their scenes. Paula Patton perfectly portrays the shallow girl you love to hate. Overall it is a bit cliche, but with so many strong actors, definitely worth the watch. See more KB B @Okbullard May 17, 2024 It's pretty entertaining but realistically,Common is a little short to be a franchise NBA star. It's worth the watch.
