Critics Consensus

As a gangster biopic, Legend is deeply flawed, but as a showcase for Tom Hardy -- in a dual role, no less -- it just about lives up to its title.

Legend really does waste the majority of its potential, Helgeland never tapping into the story of the Kray brothers in a way that is essential or lasting.

Helgeland uses long-take shots through boisterous clubs, unreliable narration and splashes of violence to create a drama of little surprise and even less impact.

It's not short of thrills, the biggest of which is Hardy's double performance.

Its approach to the gangster genre makes me think that, certainly, it delivers a remarkable performance from Tom Hardy in his dual role, but his crime legends frequent commonplaces that never abandon the conventional tone. [Full review in Spanish]

Little more than an extravagant, blood-soaked and alcohol-fueled story, Legend fulfills its title; an overinflated piece of bar room folklore better told over a cold pint of Guinness (or several).

Hardy's individual performances are excellent, quite predictably, though his characters are two-dimensional at best.

I enjoyed the film quite a bit. It’s seen through a different perspective from the main characters. We see a story of the characters from an outsider perspective with enough detail that the narrative is almost first person. It’s both a love story, action, and tragedy in one generating a series of different emotions.

Taking this movie at face value as a vehicle for the staggering talent that is Tom Hardy this would probably score full marks. One mark down for all the little flaws that are not Hardy's fault. Fair?

How Hardy was not at least nominated for an Oscar for his performance is an absolute travesty. It also shows how truly rigged the Oscars are. Hardy is absolutely incredible.
