Critics Consensus

Nora Ephron's attempt at dark comedy is an uneven product, both in terms of the direction and the acting. The characters are unlikable to the point where you don't care what happens to them, and Ephron condescends to the material.

Not a great movie, and definitely not for kids. Go to Full Review Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer Jan 1, 2000
Now I like dumb comedy as much as the next dimwit, but not when the filmmakers condescend to their characters in order to make the audience feel superior. Go to Full Review John Monaghan Detroit Free Press Jan 1, 2000

Linda G @Goldy78 Sep 22, 2025 It’s so absurd it’s funny. It’s not meant to be Shakespearean. Love John Travolta, love Lisa Kudrow and a lot of character actors that complete the cast. See more Patrick E @RT01609249 Dec 22, 2024 I dont get why this movie isn't more popular its my personal favorite from Travolta. It's hilarious seeing him play a character that you wouldn't normally expect from him. Kudrow is out of pocket hilarious as well as Bill Pullman. See more Steve D @RT35616104 Feb 10, 2023 Completely incompetent. Not one laugh to be found. See more Felix T @RT65172655 Aug 20, 2022 I can't believe the low rating for a funny movie. They delivered their lines spot on and accurately skewered the media, the police, and the whole concept of the lottery. What else do you want. See more Jul 8, 2022 Nora Ephron's gap of skipped creativity resulted in seemingly uncaring direction towards a lazily mediocre story with agreeably unlikeable characters corrupted by greed with pitifully nonsensical desperation that molded pathetic performances from a nice cast sacrificing their dignity, and it's not enough for the satisfying payoff to save this unworthy picture. (C-) See more Jun 13, 2022 Dark "comedy" that isn't funny enough or dark enough. A lot of good actors are wasted. See more Read all reviews
