Alas, even a prickly pro like Sutherland can't do anything to elevate a hokey self-help lecture disguised as family entertainment.

It's perfectly nutty and perfectly dull, like St. Vincent on Quaaludes.

Milton's Secret carries a powerful and important message, but the film feels ham-fisted, clichd and overearnest at times, especially for adult viewers.

It's not a perfect film, and it's admittedly rather slight, but it's a rare kind of picture done well.

Bain's film functions as a delivery system for Tolle's spiritual philosophy, and might have been the New Age equivalent of a stilted faith-based drama if not for its smart, nuanced performances.

It was slow and not that inspiring. I kept waiting for a "catch" to grab my attention and it never happened.

Milton and grandpa bond and together discover the alchemy of embracing today. Milton's parents also get this truth. The bully and his dad get it. And we have to thank cats for forgetting what happened yesterday and for not worrying about tomorrow. Seize the day!

This film offers an opportunity for families to talk about how they can better be in the present moment. Bain skillfully shows the difference between being enslaved by your thoughts and emotions to living in the now. He ingeniously humanizes the bully. Watching the film a 3rd time I find more nuggets of wisdom and the film itself elevates your consciousness, if you pay attention.
