The neon-hued Motel Destino is a roadside sex hotel under the burning blue skies of the coast of Northern Brazil, run by the boorish Elias and his frustrated, beautiful wife Dayana. When 21 year-old Heraldo finds himself at the motel, after messing up a hit and going on the run from both the police and the gang he let down, Dayana finds herself intrigued and lets him stay. As the two navigate a dance of power, desire and liberation, a dangerous plan for freedom emerges. In this tropical noir, loyalties and desires intertwine, revealing that destiny has its own enigmatic design.

Critics Consensus

Despite some narrative stumbles in its latter half and a style-over-substance approach at times, Motel Destino seduces with its sultry atmosphere, a trio of fearless performances, and stunning visuals.

It’s a heady brew of symbolism, which contrasts with idyllic memories and fantasies signposted by the texture of a home-movie style; colourists are the industry’s unsung heroes for the way they make a film look, and here Dirk Meier has excelled.

The payoff feels somewhat slight, but the foreplay — the will-they-or-won’t-they and the will-he-find-out — builds up with energy and flare.

Just like the best classic noirs, Motel Destino is about how easily a hot person can coax you into completely upending your life. It's not an ideal erotic thriller, but it’s actually both hot and compelling, and that might just be enough these days.

Registering as a flick best caught on a whim, preferably late at night, rather than a must-see masterpiece, Motel Destino remains true to its pulpy root inspirations.

A mildly engaging and well-shot crime thriller that suffers from style over substance and not enough surprises or palpable thrills.

There is gratuitous nudity in this film with some sensuality mixed in. I thought it worked and complimented the story arc.

In Karim Aïnouz's 'Motel Destino', the fight for the liberty and the own destiny is clearly seen when Heraldo find a refuge in a old motel in the north east side of Brazil. He wants to be loved, and to love someone, who?

Entertainment that arouses curiosity, but only excites, does not develop, neither its plot nor its characters, remaining in a boring orgy of a destination motel.

I mean this as a compliment - there's a strain of intolerable unease running through the thing. It's flawed, but you can't take your eyes off it.
