Sal D @JustTheLaw Oct 6, 2026 I am torn about reviewing this film because I am a big Michael Madsen fan. Even more so, the subject matter hits very close to home. Not sure if the movie feels off because of budget, and therefore number of takes, or whether the director saw the same final product as I did - a few too many scenes felt awkward, not because of the content, but rather the timing and delivery of the performers. In particular, Robert Laenen's performance as Danny Fenton felt off to me a few times - and the script/run time for the character should have either increased to bring more meaning, or cut, because the drama with between the character and his girlfriend was a meaningless distraction - and in the movie's last scene, I think would have benefited from another take or two. So, I was really excited to hear that the novel was becoming a movie. In the time between both, my father passed away. Realizing the film was available, I downloaded it for an international flight and ended up thrilled that I did. You don’t have to be taking such a flight, however, to watch this one. So, let me encourage you to take the time to enjoy this film that wrestles so well with life—and all the parts that contribute to making it wonderful.
