What really fills out the film is Dmytryk's jazzy application of Orson Welles's RKO set-design. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Mar 26, 2026

Dick Powell, heretofore known as a jovial hoofer in splashy musicals, pulled off a complete career about-face with his concrete-tough performance in this film noir gem. Go to Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia Jul 2, 2024

It enjoys dark atmospheres and the presence of Dick Powell as the cynical detective, but its irregular rhythm leads it through predictable areas that take away the impact hook of the mystery about necklace, suspicion and murder. David M @vicardave Sep 25, 2026 Classic Raymond Chandler adaptation, which I enjoyed, but felt there were a few too many twists packed into the final act for my own personal taste. Not a film I'm ever going to love, but there's much to admire about it technically, as well as the fine central performance from Dick Powell. It's largely aged well. See more bruce F @bruce999 Aug 3, 2026 detective film noir movie. well done. worth watching See more David K @RT61474040 Nov 26, 2025 Iconic characters with Claire Trevor showing chops unlike any before (and, she has a pretty sterling career). See more Kyle M @RT77296778 Sep 29, 2025 Where does this stand amongst the film noir genre? Pretty basic routine with a formulaic mystery and secondary deliverance of melodramatic romance, upheld by Dick Powell’s equally leveled performance and executing an elegant script makes this entertainingly decent enough. (B) See more Alec B @Alec97 May 8, 2025 One of the most pure noirs. Its everything you expect (shadows, wise cracks, femme fatales, endless twists, etc.) and is always great fun. Also, so many beautiful interior designs. See more Paul G @RT67423558 Apr 10, 2025 It's watchable but I didn't find the story the easy to follow and the language at times is very old-fashioned. Note, I have read the book and really like the authors writing but this did not work so well for me. Aside from that, Dirk Bogard is very hard to beat as Philip Marlow. See more Read all reviews
