Rachel J @RachelJ Jun 23 Alexander addresses questions about the complexity of finding love; figuring out one’s path in terms of one’s own expectations and those of family members; and navigating parenthood. We get a poignant view of his family relationships, which like everyone else’s, have their ups and downs. To me, the most pressing takeaway is learning about the extra hurdles Alexander and his partner have to navigate, due to systemic barriers that can have significant health and financial implications. In MA, regulations are in place where spouses aren't authorized to serve as paid caregivers for providing certain home-based care. Other relatives can be compensated, but a spouse is not allowed to be a paid caregiver. I find this disturbing. In MA, the Disability Policy Consortium is a great resource for learning about issues and how to take action. And if you don't live in MA, perhaps you can see what the policies are in your own state! To see how a severely disabled person lives a full life – married, with a child – and how they confront (and overcome!) the challenges that the disability creates, is enlightening, insightful, and very, very moving. And this film dives into the emotions, hardships and struggles that they face, and how they surmount them is amazing. And it is TRUE – not a drama, but a documentary!
