Critics Consensus

Nerve's fast pace and charming leads help overcome a number of fundamental flaws, adding up to a teen-friendly thriller with enough energy to occasionally offset its muddled execution.

Had Nerve stuck to the intrigue around online games, it could have been an efficiently entertaining piece of cinema.

The denouement is ridiculous, the conclusion sketchy and the script's attempts to be hip are, in the end, slightly pathetic.

‘Nerve’ proves adequately thrilling if overly simplified escapism that doubles as an able showcase for Emma Roberts and Dave Franco’s budding movie star prowess.

I loved the concept of it and how it showed the consequences of your actions. It's an underrated, underground gem that deserves more recognition so I'm really disappointed it's not more known. -1 star just because the plot was a bit unclear. It's a vibe of very cybercore, cyberpunk atmosphere. It's very interesting from the beginning AND end plus a major plot twist so definitely worth the watch!!

Nerve is built around a clever premise that has only become more relevant with time. An online game where people risk money, safety, and privacy for internet fame feels surprisingly prophetic in the age of influencers and viral challenges. Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman keep the pace brisk with stylish visuals, energetic editing, and escalating suspense that make the film consistently entertaining. Emma Roberts and Dave Franco have believable chemistry, giving the audience characters worth rooting for as the dares become increasingly dangerous. Unfortunately, the screenplay asks for a great deal of suspension of disbelief. As the game grows larger, the technology, organization, and logistics become harder to accept. The ending also resolves everything a little too neatly after raising interesting questions about anonymity, accountability, and online culture. Even so, Nerve remains an entertaining thriller with an idea that was ahead of its time.

Love the premise of the movie. Some scenes are pretty NERVE-RACKING, but some are just stupid. Nostalgic 2016 high school banger though. Good one to pass the pipe and chill on the sofa and watch. No complaints.

The movie is utterly lame. Way too millennial for me.
