In its lesser moments, the film feels like a European art-house adaptation of a Mills and Boon novel or a Saga holiday commercial, but it is beautifully shot and packed with cameos from big-name actors. Go to Full Review

On TV, this might while away a rainy Sunday afternoon. Go to Full Review

It's always a stretch for a movie to unfold in two time frames and have different actors play characters at different stages of their lives, and here the casting isn't entirely successful. Go to Full Review

It’s a swirl of mystery, romance, self-examination, and character study that does at times trip over itself and its subtle but clumsy preachiness. Go to Full Review

Irons is... asleep on the job for the entire film. Either that, or he was drugged, hypnotised and pushed in front of a camera without his knowledge or consent. Go to Full Review

A gratingly stilted endeavor, a muddled miasma of vapid, historical based intrigue that dilutes its own specific political angles with its pan-European blandness. Go to Full Review

Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 1 day ago Very likeable movie adaptation. In my opinion, superior to the book. Irons plays a teacher of Classics and Ancient Languages, a Swiss, who intervenes to stop a woman's suicide attempt. She runs off, leaving her coat and with it a rare book, and train tickets to Lisbon. He goes to the station to give them to her, but when she fails to show, spontaneously, he jumps on the train. Meanwhile, a class full of teens wonder where Mr Gregorius has got to. Our protagonist arrives in Lisbon captivated by the book and determined to learn all he can about its author. He starts meeting people who knew the man, Amadeu, and a fascinating life story is put together, bit by bit. Nice support from various character actors, but the flashback sequences are of mixed quality. Lots of lovely shots of Lisbon to enjoy. This movie won't appeal to folks under the age of, say, 35. See more R T @RT28724765 Aug 25, 2026 Slow paced, although a fictional story it's historically accurate. Decent performances, even from the portuguese cast. Couldn't understand why everyone spoke in english... I know the audience excuse, but it's just ... an excuse. Lisbon is amazing. I've slept through supposedly better movies. See more Paul S @Movieguy980 Jun 25, 2026 This movie is definitely worth the time, especially if you are aware of Portugal's 20th century history. The story line is complex but tight with increasingly revealing flashbacks. See more JOYCE M @RT91419870 Nov 29, 2025 To characterize this movie as a mystery and thriller is to not have watched it. It’s an exploration of an examined and unexamined life in the context of Portugal’s revolution in flashbacks that both provide historical narrative and inform the dilemma of the protagonist in the 21st century. It is definitely not mindless entertainment, but a thought-provoking look at lives lived with risk or safety. The acting and directing are impeccable. The book is a bit challenging, but this script makes it all make sense. See more Les M @RT69739476 May 17, 2024 With each passing film, I have less and less respect for the RT critics. The dislike of this film seems ridiculous. This is an outstanding film. Jeremy Irons leads an excellent cast. The writing is exceptional. The revealing of the story of the Lisbon resistance movement maintained my interest from beginning to end. 9 out of 10 See more Mahmoud M @Mizarcinema Mar 12, 2024 I love it, it's my stress release movies See more Read all reviews
