Critics Consensus

Underutilizing its talented cast, The Pink Panther 2 is little more than a series of lame slapstick gags.

A highly awkward and tepid climax ends things with a whimper.

There are some beautifully constructed, elaborately inventive sequences of mayhem involving sight gags; then there are the scenes in between, when people talk. These are mostly disappointing.

This revisiting of Peter Sellers' Inspector Clouseau catapults Martin so far beyond the pale of authentic comedy that there can be no hope of return.

Steve Martin continues his uninspired performance as the Inspector, complete with an intentionally bad French accent, over-the-top stupidity, and his poor pronunciation of “hamburger.”

It's unfortunate that audiences won't know until the end of the film that the best part is its opening credits cartoon.

When attempting to make a movie about a prize nincompoop then it helps if you aren't even more conspicuously dim than your protagonist. Yet on the evidence of The Pink Panther 2, it looks as though there were bumbling nitwits on both sides of the camera.

I still think Steve did an amazing job playing the inspector. The humor was perfect and the rest of the cast was amazing.

A light-hearted, comic book style movie. It is rare to see this type of movies, if at all, being enjoyable is even rarer.

Wonderful silliness wrapped into a creative and entertaining, briskly paced story. It remains puzzling why the film has been rated so poorly by both critics and audiences. It says Steve Martin on the label, and it is Steve Martin inside. Peter Sellers would surely have felt thoroughly entertained by a "successor" that effortlessly taps into the comedic spirit of the original films.
