The checkered past of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) catches up to him when he encounters Angelica (Penélope Cruz), a beautiful pirate that Jack once loved then left. Angelica forces him to accompany her to the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the notorious Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Accompanied by a zombie crew, the trio sets sail to find the legendary Fountain of Youth. However, Jack's rival, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), also seeks the fountain, as does a ship from Spain.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's shorter and leaner than the previous sequel, but this Pirates runs aground on a disjointed plot and a non-stop barrage of noisy action sequences.

just wish this movie had made me feel something, anything, even disappointment or anger. Instead, all I'm left in is a benign state of indifference. Go to Full Review David Denby The New Yorker May 23, 2011
Depp, grimacing, edges in and out of the action and seems irrelevant and bored most of the time. Go to Full Review David Edelstein New York Magazine/Vulture May 23, 2011
I've never seen a film in which what was actually onscreen seemed so irrelevant. Go to Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Jun 7, 2023

But there’s more of commercial in this film than cinema, and the entire project stinks of that ‘obligatory Hollywood sequel’ stench. Go to Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Aug 9, 2022
This badly constructed script drowns, and not for a lack of action. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Nov 30, 2020

Kyle M @RT77296778 Sep 25, 2026 Unwilling to top its epic predecessor with indecisive directorial craft in downsized tone but the production merits remain ever adventurous to solidify the fourth-coming entertainment value, this new, fun and intriguing embarkment is mainly carried by Depp’s riotously enjoyable presence with subtle growth to cherish, albeit unethical reliance, whilst impressed with the cast’s signifying attempt of rejuvenating the franchise on moderately inferior sail.
