As the daughter of a legendary actress, Suzanne constantly suffers under the crushing weight of comparison. Even her mother subconsciously admits to envying her young daughter’s talent. Growing up in the public eye is brutal. While the daughter turns to drugs for release, the mother hides behind alcoholism. The turning point arrives when the mother crashes into a tree, stripping away her glamorous facade. Without her makeup, she is someone fragile, flawed, and aging—much like the grandmother, who is revealed to be controlling and overbearing. By successfully accepting her mother's vulnerable, broken side, Suzanne is able to help her find her glory again. The final musical performance is a magnificent release of tension, transforming into an expressive, warm celebration of her own identity. I saw it at the cinema in Leeds when it came out. Being a student at the time i would never waste my money so I never walked out of movies. This is the only movie I’ve ever walked out on. I got about 45 mins in before I left. There were 4 of us and we all agreed it was dreadful and were glad we left. I can’t see how it was supposed to be a comedy it wax dreary and depressing.
