By the time it ended, I was overwhelmed with tears because of how honestly it portrays love, loss, faith, and acceptance. The film doesn’t attack religion, but instead shows the devastating consequences of using faith to judge rather than love. One of its strongest messages is that God calls us to love others with compassion, not condemnation. Sigourney Weaver delivers an extraordinary performance, capturing a mother’s heartbreaking journey from rigid beliefs to painful understanding. The screenplay is beautifully written, allowing every emotional moment to unfold naturally without feeling forced. Therefore, I had set a low bar for expectations from the start. However, some of the events in the story made me angry because they reminded me of too many similar real-life scenarios I have witnessed. It was hovering too close to home, per se, with some of the people I know in real life. It might be a bit of a melodramatic overreaction on my part. Or it might not. Either way, I give the movie credit for making me feel emotions, which is the intention I should expect from every movie I watch.
