Amanda and her stepfather Martin struggle with a moral issue that divides them. Has Amanda's mother Leslie, who has dementia, lost the ability to make critical decisions in her own best interests? And, if so, who is responsible -- a spouse, a child, an institution -- for making such a determination? As Amanda and Martin are forced to make increasingly difficult choices, the repercussions spiral out of their control. Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (The Taste of Things), Academy Award nominee Tom Courtenay (45 Years), Anna Calder-Marshall (Wuthering Heights), and Florence Hunt (Bridgerton) star in this unflinching drama. The film won the Silver Bear Jury Prize and Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.

While it’s a tough watch, and a shattering watch, it’s also tender and affecting and the cast are outstanding. It’s one of those films to file under: ‘Glad I’ve seen -- never again.’ Go to Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Sep 24, 2026
Hammer offers no neat conclusions in this empathetic and intelligent picture, which asks who gets to advocate for vulnerable loved ones who can no longer speak for themselves. Go to Full Review Alex Godfrey Empire Magazine Sep 23, 2026

Appropriately and unavoidably bleak, and keenly understated, this is nevertheless a quietly enthralling piece of cinema, grappling with dementia both morally and mentally. Despairing, hugely compassionate work. Go to Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder Sep 21, 2026

To be honest, Queen at Sea works better as an actor’s showcase than a whole feature, for the film doesn’t quite come together in its execution of such dour topics, as valiant as it may be in doing so. Go to Full Review Emma Simmonds The List Sep 21, 2026
5/5
The film elevates a fairly grim, real-world issue to something worthy of big-screen scrutiny, holding our interest and seeking to enhance understanding, without ever telling us what to think. This is what cinema should do. Go to Full Review Read all reviews
