True to series form, plot is nearly indiscernible, but this fourth installment in the sci-fi/horror/action franchise created by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson is the sleekest so far, thanks to 3D and star Milla Jovovich's body-hugging catsuit.

I guess not terrible for a fourth entry in a video-game adaption film franchise. But that’s saying like, literally nothing. This is still pretty bad, honestly. The first three I found to he consistently OK, with the second being just OK enough to actually recommend, sort of. But “Afterlife” is a mess. The character are even more one-note than usual, it looks worse than the first three (for the most part), and while there are some moments of fun, particularly in the first half, the second declines with boring set pieces and lame action. Paul W.S. Anderson clearly and unashamedly knocks off The Matrix here, to the point to where it’s just silly. There’s also a main villain here this time around, who couldn’t more generic and less memorable, except maybe to the degree to which he’s a blatant Matrix knockoff. Yep, this one’s a mess. Not the worst video-game movie ever, not even close, but it’s the worst entry I’ve seen in this series yet, though I don’t anticipate it’ll stay that way.
