Critics Consensus

Resident Evil: Apocalypse has lots of action, but not much in terms of plot or creativity.

It is certainly bad news for cinema when a video game gets turned into a full-length feature film.

By-the-numbers gory horror flick -- not for kids.

Fans of the games will have fun spotting the Easter eggs on display, but precious little else. Indeed, the chief horror here is the cliffhanger promising a third instalment.

[The director] composes the action scenes without a hint of inventiveness, just chaotic editing.

So the action — what we’re there for — is incomprehensible, and the story — what we’re not there for — even more so.

It is not that the film is stereotypical, or derivative, or often difficult to swallow. The greatest offence here is that the film is boring.

I had more fun with this one than I did with the first. It still has a myriad of problems, from the way the action was shot, to the thin characterizations, the threadbare plotting, and so on. Also, even though I’m only two movies in, I’m already getting tired of the flashbacks. There’s just way too many of them. But I do think it’s a lot of fun, and I was more entertained and engaged with it than I was with the first. I also think it looks a lot better, I liked the set pieces more, and I think it looks more cinematic. I don’t know, I just had more schlocky fun with this one. As someone who’s not a Resident Evil fan, that’s about all these movies can really give me. It’s not high art or anything, but it’s not trying to be. And for what it tries to be- FUN- it largely succeeds.

I recently watched this as I enjoyed the new 2026 rendition and this one is good definitely not my favorite but it holds it's own. I can see why it's beloved.

This film is a great example of what happens when you are married to the lead actor, and have no other reason to convince them to join your project. Reason like a good story, good editing, or acting. This comes across as a student film with some of the worst editing I've ever seen.

Watch directors cut. It fills in some dialog and pulls some scenes together.. not as good as resident evil 2002 but the last good film in this series

Before watching the recent 2026 flick, Apocalypse was my favorite Resident Evil film adaptation. It's not a knock-out, but I always enjoyed the action sequences, the zombies are threatening, and the use of Nemesis is awesome. Mike Epps delivering some funny one-liners is always a plus, in my book. 8/10
