Critics Consensus

Ruben Brandt, Collector is flawed from a storytelling standpoint, but the eye-catching animation is more than enough to make this offbeat thriller well worth watching.

Ruben Brandt, Collector is an intricately plotted, hyper-stylized piece of eye candy with art - the love of, the need for, the inability to escape from - at its wildly beating heart. Go to Full Review Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune Mar 7, 2019

A satisfying heist movie, animated or live-action, requires more selectivity and less clutter than this one. The movie dashes by door after door, but it lacks the key. Go to Full Review Carlos Aguilar The Playlist Mar 6, 2019

You'll want to watch this more than once just to catch all the references. The imagery will seem familiar but like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse this movie takes familiar images and tropes and forms them into something fresh and exciting. Go to Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Oct 28, 2020

Georgan G @RT98616417 Dec 23, 2024 This unique animated creation combines art, mystery and thriller with beautiful cinematography. Loved how the characters are abstract art. See more Oaklee D @ODie63 Nov 12, 2024 The animation is something out of a Picasso painting, the story leaves alot open to interpretation just like an abstract piece of art does. But due to the film being so abstract it definitely won't be for everyone as it may seem jarring or be hard to get into to. I found it to be enjoyable though if it was a little bit more straightforward I would have enjoyed it even more. See more Cindy H @RT84279527 Jun 21, 2022 absolutely AMAZING movie. if you like art, you will like this movie. its for a more older audience. its rated R mostly because of "nudity" but its like art nude so its not really bad. there are some violent scenes but theyre not graphic or anything either so honestly it can be PG-13 in my opinion. the entire movie is in this picasso type of art style. the story has some inception type moments where you don't really know if its really happening or not. story is great, action is great. there is a lot of symbolism and the ending can be a bit confusing because its not straight forward. its the type of ending where the viewer interprets what happens, not my favorite thing but overall i highly recommend watching this movie! MASTERPIECE! See more Feb 18, 2022 Fantastic animated film in which every frame and every detail is thought-out, "Ruben Brandt, Collector" is a love letter to visual art and cinema while also being a highly entertaining thriller. AN ABSOLUTE MUST-SEE for art lovers especially, and it is so rich you'll probably want to see it more than once, I definitely did (and have). See more Jan 28, 2022 Every frame is another piece of art! See more Jan 4, 2021 It is an absolute masterpiece of the art of animation. Line drawing, the idea of representing the character. Everything is art in this movie. See more Read all reviews
