Ashequl I @Tofa13 Sep 12, 2026 Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar (2005) is a brilliant Indian crime classic that successfully transports the core framework of The Godfather into the dark world of Mumbai politics. Anchored by a magnetic, commanding performance from Amitabh Bachchan as Subhash Nagre, the film thrives on its thick atmosphere, sharp dialogue, and intense moral stakes. Abhishek Bachchan delivers a fantastic, restrained performance as his Son Shankar, while Kay Kay Menon shines as the volatile, envy-driven brother. RGV’s direction is razor-sharp, utilizing heavy shadow work, tight camera angles, and a memorable background score to keep the narrative moving through unpredictable political twists. While a few over-the-top dramatic moments push past the film's grounded tone, the stellar climax and phenomenal lead dynamics make it a legendary watch. The Director’s Eye: Varma uses intense close-ups and heavy shadows for a super moody vibe. Through my traditional lens, I loved the core themes of fierce family loyalty and protecting your community when the government is corrupt. Sarkar steps up to deliver justice when the system completely fails. Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan playing father and son brings authentic gravitas. The haunting score and repeating chant build insane tension. The Cuts: Since it follows The Godfather so closely, it’s predictable, so the middle part really dragged for me waiting for the betrayal. The female characters felt underwritten, mostly just reacting. Also, the experimental camera work (lots of weird, tilted angles and shaky shots) honestly made me dizzy during regular dialogue scenes. It manage to strike that balance between being of the same vein as what it's adapting/admiring but also being its own thing. I'll probably watch the sequel because I heard it's just as good, and I am always up for more Bachchans. See more Oct 27, 2012 A great adaptation of THE GODFATHER! See more Read all reviews
