Sheep in the Box is a disappointing, tedious, and unimaginative sci-fi drama about two grieving parents who get a humanoid robot boy to replace their deceased 7-year-old son. The human characters are just as robotic as the android.

Kore-eda doesn’t have an answer for us, and while he certainly has the right to avoid prescriptive moralism, he might’ve offered something richer in return. Sheep in the Box ultimately does not.

Sheep in the Box starts strong then tumbles and bumper cars unrelated ideas until the very end. It is incredibly disappointing to watch something from a filmmaker like Koreeda that feels so devoid of heart.

Conceptually Sheep In The Box treads on interesting & familiar themes from director Kore-eda. The film is best when it focuses on the main family, & intentionally shies away from any ethical conversation. That said, there's not much of an emotional journey to really latch on to.
