It's disappointing when the electrifying dance numbers are jettisoned for the lackluster story.

The salsa scenes are the main draw here, and while the camerawork is unremarkable - zoom in, then pull back, then repeat - the energy stays high.

Shine: The Movie is at its best every time first time director, Anthony Nardolillo, decides to give us an energetic dance sequence, full of good music, sweat and passion. [Full review in Spanish]

Shine wants to be a dance movie and a piece of social commentary at the same time. Too much of the running time is consumed by the commentary, which has all the depth of a third-grade book report.

It's Zayas who anchors Shine. His gravitas shot through with mischief sets the film's tone, showing that serious-minded storytelling can still be fun.

This rehash of save-the-neighborhood cliches - devised by first-time director Anthony Nardolillo and co-writers Corey Deshon and Ahmadu Garba - is instantly forgettable, except for the ridiculous use of F-bombs.

Hands down, Amazing! The authenticity and vision brought to life with this film brings out ALL the feels in you, you just don't want it to end. One minute you want to jump up and dance, the next you want to cry. It truly touches the heart. Can't wait to see what's next.

The dancing is amazing. The music is amazing. That dancers.... REAL dancers.... professional dancers from all over the world were able to collaborate to make a movie that gets to the heart of Salsa, the Latino community, problems with gentrification and the importance of embracing family, history and Latino culture in the US is enough to inspire support. We all went together as a group and went dancing afterward.

Fantastic movie that has one of the Puerto Rican Culture in New York down pat. We’re also lawyers, business men & women, teachers, etc. However our music is a large art of who we ARE.
