Jeffrey E @RT69505030 May 7, 2026 I applaud the ambitious effort, but the cinematic attempt at creating the "one continuous shot" appearance depleted the impact. The story itself occurs in a 24 hour period, so there is no point in trying to make it appear as though the camera was following the action in real time. Performances were decent, but uneven. Doing coverage would have helped, as most of the cast were not veteran actors. A lot of the dialog was declaratory/exclamatory, without nuance or insight. Having studied Jewish history, I praise the filmmaker for including the varied beliefs and perspectives of the village's (Jewish) community rather than presenting a monolith (a la Fiddler), but there's no character development. The ending was also melodramatic -- down to making sure we knew the distant soldiers were by dubbing in two "Heil Hitlers" and Nazi salutes. I'm sure this film will please many (older, mostly) Holocaust junkies, as well as those less concerned with the aesthetics/art of fine filmmaking. Great capture of a time, a place, and the people who lived, loved and argued in that universe — moments before they were swept away in the Tsunami of hate that was the Holocaust. Great story, acting, cinematography, characters -- an extraordinary and quite beautiful movie about a small village in Soviet-held Ukraine over the course of 24 hours in 1941.
