In the heart of a botanical garden in a medieval university town in Germany stands a majestic ginkgo tree. This silent witness has observed over a century the quiet rhythms of transformation across three human lives. 2020, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong, exploring the mind of babies, begins an unexpected experiment with the old tree. 1972, a young student is profoundly changed by the simple act of observing and connecting with a geranium. 1908, the university’s first female student discovers, through the lens of photography, sacred patterns of the universe hidden within the humblest of plants. We follow their clumsy, awkward attempts to connect -- each one of them deeply rooted in their own present - as they are transformed by the quiet, enduring, and mysterious power of nature. The ancient ginkgo tree brings us closer to what it means to be human -- to our longing to belong.

Critics Consensus

Surveying the natural world and the people who wander through it with generous empathy, Silent Friend is one of writer-director Idikó Enyedi's most lyrical and profound efforts yet.

It’s meditative and patient, and it wants viewers to do what every therapist and wellness advocate is saying: slow down, smell the flowers and feel the grass between your toes.

Enyedi may be out to impress us with the wonders of nature, but her aim is to slow the pulse and inspire contemplation rather than infuse us with the excitement of discovery.

Silent Friend is long at 2 1/2 hours, but it's a movie to slow down your rhythms for and breathe in through your pores.

There is value in it if you truly want something different and unconventional, but it's best to go in forewarned. [Full review in Spanish]

The film has meditative pacing, but its lush cinematography completely enthralls. It’s an immersive experience, visionary in it’s ambitions, and unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.

Silent Friend is a unique meditation on how humans and nature are intrinsically intertwined, whether humans realize it or not.

Gorgeous movie full of symbolism and striking imagery. The cast/acting is exceptional as is the writing and music. The one tiny beef I have is the sound editing and how the plant sound effects (showing their sped up growth) was too much - same sounds but quieter would have been more effective imo. But that's nitpicking, and no reason to skip this film. It's about life and what it means to be alive, and it's brilliant. See it!

A movie with a grand theory about what unites us to the world around us. I dont think it really delivers on that theory and they kind of just stay theoretical.

One third of a beautiful film, two thirds of a waiting room. The 2020 segment is lovely - Tony Leung, lonely on a locked-down campus, falling into quiet communion with a centuries-old ginkgo tree. It made me want to hug the tree and hug Tony Leung. But Enyedi insists on time-traveling to two other stories I never asked to visit, and a Zoom call with Léa Seydoux I couldn't bring myself to care about. A triptych where only one panel glows. The ginkgo deserved better company.

I found it tedious, I wanted to know more about the science of plant communication and just saw these drawn out half-lives of three people . The photography was beautiful but some interior shots seemed very contrived. The gratuitous sex innuendo seemed to be included only to titillate . The actor who portrayed the Chinese Doctor was excellent.

Very quiet and atmospheric. It isn't the kind of movie I'd recommend if you're looking for something fast-paced, but I really appreciated how much it trusts the audience to sit with the characters and figure things out.

Truely a masterpiece for those who long for "connections". The making, performance, cinematography and the music….poetic in every sense!
