Critics Consensus

Sleepless in Seattle is a cute classic with a very light touch and real chemistry between the two leads -- even when spending an entire movie apart.

Sleepless In Seattle balances romance and realism by giving its central characters two different but equally pragmatic philosophies on love.

"Sleepless in Seattle" (citywide), a real charmer, is a romantic comedy about an ultimate long-distance relationship. Emphasize "romantic." Emphasize "comedy." It delivers both.

Self-consciousness infects Nora Ephron's sweet but perilously thin love story, Sleepless in Seattle...such are the perils of these postmodernist times: even our love stories feed off borrowed emotion.

Sleepless in Seattle is odd because there is no meet cute until the final scene. Somehow, Norah Ephron has created a world where it makes sense that two strangers are separated by 3,000 miles and still manage to fall in love.

Sleepless in Seattle succeeds as a glorious three-way romantic comedy between men, women and children. It's a valiant valentine to the post-nuclear family.

72%. 10/1/26. Pretty slow for me. The premise is cute - Annie becomes obsessed with a widower she hears on the radio - but it's a stretch that someone as attractive as her would resort to anything like this. And even setting aside the far-fetched setup, it just didn't do much for me overall. Jonah is the best part of the movie - his determination to find his dad a new partner is endearing and gives the film most of its energy. I love how he gets fixated on Annie. The long buildup does pay off when they finally meet at the top of the Empire State Building, and the Seattle house is a great backdrop. Glad I finally checked it off the list, but no need to revisit. 1.5/5 rewatch

Finally watched it because of all the hype. The leading lady had an emotional affair the entire movie, and the love interests got together in the last 5 minutes in a quick wrap up. I couldn’t understand the chemistry since the storytelling didn’t make much sense

This is the first time I’ve seen a story that is this calm and more meaningful in my lifetime. All I can say is that SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE is a wonderful treat for those that need it most.
