Mar 5, 2022 Absolutely mind blowing account of a true story during the Space Race. For me, the film completely outranked "Apolo 13". It managed to capture the era, successfully hint at the workings of the political establishment and cover personal and emotional angles effortlessly. I'm not familiar with Russian cinema, but I will be looking to acquaint myself with it much more after "Spacewalker"! See more Tony S @RT94004908 Dec 7, 2021 This is a studio movie through and through. At some point it had a singular vision of one director but whatever it was, producers didn't like it. Apparently it had Gagarin too and a better pace given the longer runtime. However, the result is a run of the mill space exploration film. A lot of expository dialogue. Exaggerations for the sake of tension or presumed danger. The plot blatantly ticks off the boxes for this type of film, crafting a narrative, yet forgetting to give main characters anything but hollow husk of a cliche to play off to no fault of the actors of course who give those roles all they have. All that said. When they get to space, you can not help to be engulfed with Leonov's almost childish wonder and excitement for finally fulfilling his dream. Visually, it is beautifully conveyed. And despite feeling glossy in some aspects, the 60's USSR is authentically captured on screen. See more Mar 23, 2021 I think I'd rate it higher if the movie was available in the original language with subtitles, because the dubbing takes away the intonation, which is a major part of acting. That said, the storyline is fascinating, and mostly true to life. A lot of people have compared it to Apollo 13, and that's a fair comparison. But it's good to see a story like this from the Russian side, because it reminds us that deep down, there's more that unites us as human beings than divides us. See more Feb 21, 2021 Wow! what a movie! After the end of the devastating world war 2, in which est 27 million russians died fighting the nazis. USSR was not to spare the western nations got together to bring down one of the greatest nations to date. Even in the midst of all this (Nazis recruited by the Americans), Russians built one of the finest pieces of space machinery and still do so. One of the greatest films I have ever watched. You can only imagine the courage and inspiration to explore the unknown getting out in space. where the closest help is death. It is a straight 2-hour space-related stuff. The very first scene is Gagarin managing to land a defective combat aircraft. Too many movies nowadays pick an interesting topic then put that concept to the back and focus on the mundane lives of the main characters. Here you get to see some of the characters background but that is a tiny version of the total screen time which is amazing and refreshing. It is especially enjoyable because it is NOT a piece of political propaganda in favor of Soviet Rusia or the Communist ideology. I need to mention this because I think it is relevant in this scenario. This movie actually manages to be self-critical of the circumstances of the time. For example, in a couple of lines of dialogue, Gagarin casually lets people know that he lost his father and lived under poor conditions thanks to the revolutionaries. Regarding to the historical aspect, I am glad that the people who made this movie did not made up some drama or changed the facts to make it entertaining. There is a climax (maybe more than one) but it is based on real stuff that went wrong for real during the mission. Even the last part where they head back to Earth indeed happened. It is hard to come by such stories showing real-life events as opposed to based on real events with an absurd use of artistic license to make more... conventional, commercial? I am just glad people like this exist that are actually trying to do good stuff. Worth the time and money. You may need to sit through closed captions unless there is a voiceover version in English out there. Again, totally worth it. See more Read all reviews
