08/04/2012 Probably my favorite of his shorts. (Also, his Mutual contract was one of his best times for them). Worth seeing for his brilliant drunk character. His stash accidentally gets dumped into the water supply and everyone gets wildly drunk. Lots of laughs. There are a few pretty great moments and the overall film is fun and silly, but it does feel a bit lacking and disappointing as you know that it pales in comparison with Charlie's best work. See more 09/24/2010 Chaplin turns what was then and what is now a very serious subject- alcoholism- into a barrel of laughs, and ingeniously does it at no one's expense but his own, making this Mutual short both a commentary on addiction and recovery and a comedic escape. Playing a character somewhere in between the Tramp and the bourgeois boob, Chaplin waddles through a health spa spreading his drunken misadventures to massage rooms and old lady gatherings until the whole place dips in for a binge. See more Mike M @RT59071784 02/12/2010 There's still room for some filler material between the killer gags, and much of it - dependent on Chaplin's "comedy" drunkery - now appears more quaint than funny; the slapstick, and all the star's coy glances to camera, unfolds in the absence of a comic philosophy that means Chaplin, to these eyes, will always suffer when set against Keaton and (especially) Laurel and Hardy. Still, not every audience goes to a comedy for the philosophy, and the timing of the revolving door routine, for one, remains matchless: it would be worth watching for its opening and closing moments alone.
