Nic F @munitots 1d I don't understand why this movie doesn't have better ratings. In my eyes, this was a really interesting folk horror, with exceptional acting, and beautiful cinematography that created an eerie, growing atmosphere of dread, throughout. I really liked the "show don't tell" nature of the direction, too – just observing characters doing everyday chores and actions, set the scenes nicely without having to overly explain their situations, and gave the story a realistic grounding. Marcia Gay Harden is amazing in this, completely believable accent, really gets under your skin without clunky horror clichés, you feel her fear of being abandoned, and the selfish lengths she will go to, to retain what little control she has. The atmosphere throughout is gently threatening and grows on you, as the movie progresses. Slight spoiler: I saw people complaining about the ending, but i thought it was a good point of saying "now you have the power, what will you do with it". I thought The Dreadful was good until the ending. I wished the movie had said what that knight's mask was all about--where it came from and what was its significance. You're left to guess for yourself. I was drawn into watching this movie because of the presence of Kit Harrington and Sophie Turner, They were both in The Game of Thrones and seeing them together brought me back to that (except for season 8). I followed this movie closely and was waiting for a killer ending. I was deeply disappointed. If not for the ending, I would have given The Dreadful a 3 & 1/2 star rating instead of my 1 & 1/2 stars.
