Vampire hunter Professor Abronsius (Jack MacGowran) and his faithful assistant, Alfred (Roman Polanski), are traveling across Transylvania when they stop to rest at a suspicious-looking inn. That night, they witness the innkeeper's daughter, Sarah (Sharon Tate), being whisked away by Count von Krolock (Ferdy Mayne), an obvious vampire, and pursue him to his nearby castle. They break in, only to be invited to stay by the unfazed count, and plot to rescue Sarah and destroy their murderous host.

Critics Consensus

This uneven but amiable 1967 vampire picture is part horror spoof, part central European epic, and 100 percent Roman Polanski, whose signature sensibility colors every frame.

Ferdy Mayne is the menacing Dracula, and Sharon Tate, lady in question, looks particularly nice in her bath. Go to Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine Oct 19, 2009

Robert P @Superbad 2 days ago This is a remake of Dracula so I give it a *3.5* star review! See more Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Oct 4, 2026 Like a Hammer movie but on location and with superior production. Never very funny but pretty amusing. The movie that introduced Roman to Sharon. She plays the landlord's daughter, and Roman is the professor's assistant, both guests at the inn. A vampire comes calling. Lovely scenery. The castle sequences are good too. Spot the evil Nazi guy from Raiders Of The Lost Ark if you can. The worst bit is the Vampires' Ball, which features the worst choreographed 'dancing' I have ever seen; more like a lifeless procession. In sum, I'd say this movie looks better than it sounds. Definitely worth seeing as a curio, but don't expect too much. See more bruce F @bruce999 Aug 14, 2026 a drama, of the world of vampires . it's well done. See more David K @RT61474040 Oct 26, 2025 Enjoyable, funny, not scary. One of the problems I always have is watching Sharon Tate in anything because of her horrible demise and the sickness that led to that. I know it's not relevant to anyone's enjoyment of the film but I can't see her (or Polanski) and not think of that. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Mar 30, 2025 Filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é mais ou menos, as cenas de mais ou menos, o elenco é bacaninha e poucos ajudam a melhorar o filme. See more Lancaster T @RT54149356 Sep 15, 2024 While this film was produced as a comedy, it is one of the best horror films I have ever seen. The mood set by this film is tremendous. Spider webbed halls, dripping candles, vampires emerging from crypts under a full moon. Wonderful stuff and all kept together with a brilliant soundtrack from Krystof Komeda.
