Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times Mar 1, 2019
Though there are some well-framed shots from cinematographer Mathieu Plainfossé, the script from Gerry De Leon and director Ty Roberts is lifeless, covered in a layer of dust that the cast can't rouse it from. Go to Full Review Matthew Monagle Austin Chronicle Feb 28, 2019

What it lacks is a distinct perspective; for all its period details and solid acting, the underlying message about this time in Texas oil history - that it was right, that it was wrong, that it was necessary - is lacking. Go to Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Feb 28, 2019
Seemingly nostalgic for a period when West Texas roughnecks settled scores with baseball bats and laid pipe with pickaxes, this lovingly made homage to avarice feels strangely limp. Instead of gushing, it trickles. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Jul 27, 2019

If writer-director Ty Roberts doesn't exactly hit pay dirt, neither does he leave viewers completely empty-handed. Go to Full Review Daniel Eagan Film Legacy Jul 23, 2019
Thin but likable account of an oil wildcatter's rise and fall. Strong production values help offset cast and script issues. Go to Full Review Dominic Griffin Spectrum Culture Jul 17, 2019

A curious soap opera that nobody outside of Texas will give a [crap] about. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

The H. @moviebuffaloe Feb 28, 2026 Pride comes before the fall. Based on the 1966 novel of the same name. Accurate depiction of the life of an oil man in west Texas. Decent movie for what it is. Could it have done better with the acting and script? Sure, but it was entertaining. I would say a B+ level. I don’t feel like I wasted my time. See more Slick R @SlickReviewer Jul 26, 2025 Acting could have been better, but that's what you get from B rated actors. It's like a really slow version of Landman. See more Mar 16, 2019 Loved it. Every frame. See more Mar 3, 2019 Exceptional movie that shows the working relations with oil field hands and the money that backs the venture. Money makes people do strange things. Love, lust, deceptions and greed will be found in this movie. Great depiction of what the west Texas oil is all about. A must see. See more Mar 3, 2019 Thoughtful independent film based on a novel of the same name reminds us of the history of wildcatting in Texas. Authentic Peroid details set in West Texas , directed with a sensitivity for the men and women who lived for the power of black gold .
