A family curse confines orphaned twins Rachel and Edwards to their home as punishment for their ancestors' sins. Bound to the rules of a haunting childhood lullaby, the twins must never let any outsiders inside the house, must be in their rooms by the chime of midnight, and must never be separated from one another. Breaking any of these rules will incur the wrath of a sinister presence that inhabits the house after midnight.

Critics Consensus

Like many real-life long-term visitors, The Lodgers starts out with a modicum of mystery and excitement, but eventually overstays its welcome.

There are unmistakable shadows of The Turn of the Screw in Brian O'Malley's modestly successful ghost story.

The Lodgers disappoints on a number of levels, many of which have more to do with the limitations of its creators' imagination than the apparently minuscule budget.

For viewers who take it more as a moody, metaphorical historical drama than as an out-and-out horror film, there's a lot in this lush-looking, sensitively acted picture to recommend.

The Lodgers is subtle in it's horror, and in it's beauty, a fantastic period piece that's well worth the watch.

A case of less not being more; the audience lulled into a state of indifference that O'Malley's suspended underwater climax cannot revive.

The audience will find here a couple of sequences with a very good atmosphere, a couple of quite imaginative sequences. [Full Review in Spanish]

1920. Rural Ireland. Two twin brothers living in a sumptuous real estate are oppressed by generational rules supposedly meant to protect them against evil forces. The girl breaks the rules when she meets a boy in a nearby village, provoking these supernatural entities. "The Lodgers" is a gothic story built in a unique set (the famous Loftus Hall). But the plot lacks on substance as its horror layer always plays on the safe side by delivering the usual jump scares.

Not a very engaging or satisfying film

I enjoyed this film for the acting, and the intriguing plot. However, there really isn't a lot to the film. It is leisurely in its pace, and sets up for a nice climax. Unfortunately, I found the climax underwhelming. While the plot is basically a horror story. There really isn't a lot of horror or scares. I also found the source of the haunting/horror to be kind of bazaar and certainly unique.

This was a very strange kind of olden-days movie that just dropped the viewer right in the middle of the plot with no explanation. There were creepy whispers, but they were difficult to hear. This was a very strange curse to hold the entire supernatural plot. The ending was extremely odd, disappointing, and with far too many naked people.

Certainly perverse, but not scary nor terrifying.

The Lodgers, isn't particularly exciting but it is very intriguing. The whole story line is slightly more weird than wonderful which certainly gives it a lot more flavour. It can be quite slow but if this type of thing (psychological/ paranormal horror) is something that interests you then it will most likely hold your interest. It unravels nicely with a few jump scares, heroine moments and heartbreaks to make it worth a watch or two.
