The Red Virgin is conceived and educated by her mother Aurora to be the woman of the future, becoming one of the most brilliant minds in Spain in the 1930s and one of Europe's leading referents on female sexuality. At 18, Hildegart begins to experience freedom and meets Abel Velilla, who helps her to explore a new emotional world, and to break away from her mother's iron nest. Aurora fears losing control over her daughter, and does everything she can to prevent Hildegart from moving away. The two women clash on a summer night in 1933 putting an end to the "Hildegart Project".

A very successful dramatic narrative, unfortunately based on real events. The young girl was a prodigy and she was killed by her mother who had a serious psychiatric disorder. The film is impeccably photographed and acted. My only two objections is the symbolism of the marble statue and the interposition near the end of the child actor to show, I assume, how her mother sees her near adult daughter.

An incredible film. Utterly beautiful in its production, incredibly well acted and I was hooked by its quiet intensity. It's a Netflix production, and without wanting to be rude about Spanish films, it shows.

The theme of female emancipation, although important, is overexposed and repetitive, giving the feeling that the message is more important than the story. Ultimately, "Hildegart: the Red Virgin" is a work that functions more as an ideological manifesto than as a universal narrative, risking alienating those looking for a less schematic story.
