“Through the Rocks and Clouds” is a defiant film, one that is so thoughtfully calibrated it’d be easy to miss just how well it mixes the whimsical with the profound. Go to Full Review Gustavo Herrera Taboada Cinencuentro Oct 17, 2025
...its honest and empathetic look at the problems and challenges facing Cusco and much of the country makes it a must-see for Peruvians of all ages. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Kevin Wight The Wee Review Oct 9, 2025

Instantly charming, but exiles its central conflict so far into the background that it never gains any dramatic momentum. What’s left feels like a character study of a boy who is still too young for his character to have fully developed. Go to Full Review William Stottor Loud and Clear Reviews Sep 3, 2024

The childlike innocence and playfulness of Raíz (Through Rocks and Clouds) is enjoyable, but its depiction of tradition fighting modernisation is frustratingly meagre. Go to Full Review Juan José Beteta Cinencuentro Aug 16, 2024
Because of these structural weaknesses, the movie is unable to take flight. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Claudia Arteaga Olórtegui Cinencuentro Aug 12, 2024
Although it is a choice of approach – not all films that address environmental issues have to be political – it leaves us unsteady; a film that sought to combine aesthetic resources with a social theme but falls by the wayside. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Rhonda M @RhondaMac Jun 22, 2026 A lovely, gentle and subtle movie with amazing Peruvian costumes, spectacular mountains, lots of alpacas and a very watchable and playful boy shepherd with more than a touch of soccer madness. Mining interests meets traditional lifestyle. Amazing photraphy captures the arrogance of progress, the eerie haunting beauty of the landscape and the richness of the community life under threat. There is tragedy and there is happiness. The ending is convincing because it doesn't lapse into happy ever after but nor does it into despair either. It moves slowly but watching it was definately worth the journey. See more Read all reviews
