"Time to Die" turns the showdown narrative of so many oaters into an actively intelligent, darkly funny and no less suspenseful rumination on the pull of the horizon versus the ill wind at the back.

[Gabriel Garca] Mrquez and Fuentes treat the hero's atonement and friendships with great feeling, but there's a dark side to the film's poignancy, because the man's every encounter may be his last.

On the whole, sharp dramatization and direct performances suffice to put the story's themes across more urgently than expected.

The cover makes it look like a telenovela . . . but this film by legendary Mexican director Arturo Ripstein has more in common with classic, tense psychological Westerns like High Noon and the original 3:10 to Yuma.

There are more virtues than debits to Time to Die, and Western fans should be relatively satisfied.

Beautiful film. The use of camera angles in movement, including the shakey ones, and the use of sounds were extremely well done for the time period. The plotline of youthful masculinity vs. matured masculinity is one that never seems to age out of style- remaining ever prevalent in our cultures. The acting was good and the ending scene with the cross in the desert really pulled it together. I was sad at the end and quite shocked, but as mature as a young man may seem, if pushed to the edge he has not had long enough mastery of himself to not succumb to emotional impulse.
