Joel H @786Joel 5 days ago When it comes to creating a spooky atmosphere and offering some pretty impressive visual effects for 1932, Vampyr excels. However, when it comes to presenting a comprehensible plot and clearly distinguishable characters, this film comes up short. I kept wondering if it was just my brain that wasn’t able to figure out what was going on, at times, but it seems audiences of that time agreed with me. Carl Theodor Dreyer is a talented director, but this film seems to sacrifice story to create art. There were a few creepy visuals that will stick with me, but I don’t think I’ll choose to watch Vampyr again. The original score by Zeller is beautiful and fitting. See more Melissa L @Agent99 Jun 25, 2026 I recommend it...especially for those who are students of early film. Make sure to watch it on a medium that supports subtitles. See more Garry A @heavyg May 25, 2026 I was a little confused about who was alive and who was dead. But, for a film with very little dialogue, I thought it was pretty good. I really enjoy the use of shadows an skeletons to create an eriee environment. If Kafka had made a horror film instead of writing novels, it might have looked a lot like this, just with a few more forms to fill out before the dread kicks in. Beautifully done, an art piece for the ages. You could pull almost any frame at random and it would make a perfect power electronics LP cover.
