Critics Consensus

The Village is appropriately creepy, but Shyamalan's signature twist ending disappoints.

It all comes to a head... in perhaps the greatest sequence Shyamalan has ever filmed.

Shyamalan's films never send that chill up the bone on a second viewing. Worse, with Signs and The Village even the first viewing is becoming a bit of a yawn.

The thing that I cherish most about this movie is the devotion to atmosphere. It’s spooky and stark, set in the woods of New England and it just feels like Halloween.

What kind of world do we owe our kids? How can we best prepare them to live in it after we’re gone? In Shyamalan's Knock At The Cabin, the cost of a safer world is great personal sacrifice. The Village places that burden on the next generation too.

I do think this is one of Shyamalan’s most accomplished works, and one that should be more recognized for the talent it shows behind and in front of the camera.

The movie held promise, which got lost in the woods. I got bored, also in the woods. Not a great movie.

To be frank, it seems most reviewers are too busy with their nose in a thesaurus marked with a pretentious wine stain than actually watching the movie. So with that, know this movie truly does build an atmosphere that will draw you in… either because you are watching the movie or because at the end you will be the one to say “I knew it” while the rest of us are left savoring the beauty the movie offered. Enjoy it just as the elders, with a childlike whimsy not burdened by those who seek to destroy.

This movie was original, cinematic, and skillfully creative. Loaded with talented actors of varied backgrounds and experience, they managed to create a magically innocent village of simplicity and mutual love. The story unfolded with a beautiful score, in a scenic environment of natural beauty, with a slow burn of horror threatening, while a painfully sweet love story unfolded. I think the critics got it wrong. Maybe it was too sophisticated in composition and presentation for their commercial checklist of approval. I never get tired of watching it, and notice something new every time.

I really liked the atmosphere here. The village, the woods, the strange creatures, and that constant feeling that something was watching created a genuinely creepy experience. The twist may not work for everyone, and I can understand the criticism, but I actually enjoyed where it went. The pacing is a little slow and some characters could've been developed better, but the mood and mystery kept me invested.
