In the 1930s, lovesick Texan Dove Linkhorn (Laurence Harvey) hits the road to search for his long-lost sweetheart, Hallie Gerard (Capucine). He meets free-spirited Kitty Twist (Jane Fonda) along the way, and she joins him on his trip to New Orleans, where the two find Hallie working at a brothel. Her (Jane Fonda's) role in WOTWS, the petulant street kid turned prostitute Kitty Twist, would prove just how eclectic Fonda could be onscreen, even this early in her career. Her feral performance received the lion's share of the few positive notices. Go to Full Review Janet Graves Photoplay Nov 17, 2020
Obviously, it's supposed to be real hot stuff, but we couldn't work up even a lukewarm interest in what would happen to any of its people -- who are either completely vicious or completely wish-washy. Go to Full Review Steve Crum Video-Reviewmaster.com Mar 8, 2008

Sleazy atmosphere prevails with Fonda and Capucine as brothel babes. Go to Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Jun 29, 2007

This lurid, intense drams is pseudo Tennessee Williams, about a Texas drifer and desperate women in his life, but it shows Stanwyck as a lesbian (one of Hollywood's first) and signs of Jane Fonda's talent Go to Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Aug 2, 2006

Martin B @RT44235356 Feb 27, 2026 It sure has the heavy hitter cast, the settings, lighting and it's moments. But watching Hallie turn on and off like a light switch on what she'd decided to to got tedious. See more nick s @Nick_S Nov 30, 2025 Great cinematography, sets & lighting. Top cast that played their characters well. The main failings for me were the slow pace and uninspiring story line. The moral lessons were a bit of a drag too. Overall I enjoyed it. See more j F @RT31612624 Nov 28, 2025 If you like cats this opening credits are for you! See more The B @RT03040281 May 12, 2025 This movie has been wildly underrated. The acting is compelling and the chemistry between almost everyone except Laurence Harvey and Capucine is dynamic and convincing. Barbara Stanwyck's performance is particularly compelling and her monolog about how little men know about true love absolutely sells her obsession with Hallie Gerard. See more Alain E @AlainE Feb 26, 2025 Has not aged well. Fonda’s acting is quite unnatural. Not worth seeing the whole thing. See more Jack S @RT58840043 Nov 20, 2024 A forgettable and uninspired southern melodrama which never comes alive. An attractive cast helps but, Harvey, Capucine and Baxter (seriously miscast) between the three of them can’t manage enough charisma to amount to one single memorable character. However, Fonda shines in a good early effort as the only memorable character onscreen. See more Read all reviews
